Are my headaches related to poor posture?
Headaches are the single most common neurological complaint in the UK. At Cheshunt Chiropractic Clinic we regularly see patients suffering this painful and debilitating condition. Our success rate, both at relieving the symptoms and fixing the underlying causes of the problem, is extremely good.
The reason chiropractic treatment works so well is that headaches and migraines are often related to a person’s posture and the subsequent problems this causes to the spine.
The most common type of headache is known as a ‘cervicogenic headache’. This is caused when the cervical spine – the area around your neck – becomes misaligned.
When this happens, the blood vessels and nerves that connect your neck to your skullbecome agitated and inflamed, causing a painful reaction in your head.
The pain is not actually originating in your head; it is simply caused by the trapped nervesin your neck.
This pain will vary in intensity, location and duration and occurs either in the forehead, temple and/or ears, or behind the eyes.
The most common underlying cause is abnormal neck posture. This often comes from sitting at a computer for long hours, spending a lot of time behind the wheel of a car, watching lots of TV, and increasingly from excessive mobile phone use – especially smartphones.
However, it can be brought on by most on-going and repetitive tasks, whether around the home or in the workplace.
How do we treat headaches?
We have almost 25 years’ experience in dealing with this very common condition.
First we will assess your posture and look for any underlying causes, making sure that we rule out any other possible causes. We will conduct a series of neurological, muscular and orthopaedic tests, as well as studying the range of motion in your cervical spine (neck region of the spine).
We also conduct an in depth medical history and make sure that we rule out any nutritional, environmental and allergy issues.
With headaches it may be necessary to take x-rays or MRI scans of the neck and spine, to make sure that we check for any underlying causes. At Cheshunt Chiropractic Clinic we have x-ray facilities on-site and can do this for you straight away.
Once this is all done we recommend the optimal course of treatment tailored for your individual condition.
How can I prevent headaches?
Dr Leizer says:
“The best way to prevent headaches is to maintain a good posture, and to keep your back and neck strong and flexible through low-impact exercise such as yoga.
If you work at a desk make sure you follow safe working procedures and take plenty of screen breaks. You should also stay hydrated with plenty of water.
Above all have your neck and posture checked regularly by a chiropractor, after all, prevention is a lot easier, quicker and cheaper than cure.”
